Redesign Your Formal Living Room to Make It Approachable and Comfortable

May 15, 2017 0 Comments

Do you love the idea of having a formal living room in your home, but you are worried about the comfort of your family? Some people mistakenly think that they have to choose between formal style and comfort. But, there are a few strategies that can be used to upgrade the appearance of the room and maintain the comfort of your living room at the same time.

Modernize Your Style

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make is having a formal living room with outdated furniture. When people visit your home, the living room is often one of the first areas that they will see when they walk in the door. Outdated furniture will make your home look old and neglected!
Often, the formal living room furniture is in good condition. Homeowners don’t use the room regularly in their everyday activities. As a result, the furniture doesn’t get scratched or worn from daily use. Even if the furniture is still functional and solid, you aren’t doing yourself any favors by maintaining an outdated room.
Look at current trends and make sure that your furniture is designed to match. In some situations, you can simply hire someone to put new fabric on the couches, giving the room a modern, retro style. In other situations, it might be best to get rid of the old furniture and start fresh instead.

Open Up the Living Space

It is common for homeowners to make the mistake of putting too much furniture in one room. If the formal living room is a small space, then you might not have enough room to position a piano and a full couch set. Make sure that the room maintains the function, but consider getting rid of a few furniture pieces to open up the floor space in the room.
Another common pitfall is for the formal living room to be bare. Since you aren’t spending a lot of time in this room, have you failed to put in the effort to add the finishing touches? Two plain couches aren’t enough to make the room look inviting and welcoming.
If the furniture is lacking, you might be able to add style to the room with accessories. Find a nice area rug that will add color and depth to the room. Consider placing lights in the dark corners, adding fresh greenery, or hanging some modern art pieces on the walls.

Consider the Needs of Your Family

As you are preparing to redesign your formal living room, it is important also to consider the needs of your family. It is possible to find stylish furniture that can be durable, allowing you to feel comfortable using the room more often. Just because you are designing a formal living, doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t start using the room in the future!
